Westonaria

Westonaria is a town in South Africa’s Gauteng province, in the west. It is part of the West Rand District Municipality’s Rand West City Local Municipality. Africans lived in Bekkersdal outside of town during the apartheid era. It lies 45 kilometers west of Johannesburg and 18 kilometers south of Randfontein.

It was formed in 1948 by combining the townships of Venterspost (established in 1937) and Westonaria (established in 1938). When the town was granted municipal status in 1952, the name was changed from Venterspost. After the township development business Western Areas Ltd, the name is a homophone of ‘western area.’

Westonaria Local Municipality was a municipality in Gauteng, South Africa, that was part of the West Rand District Municipality. It was amalgamated with the Randfontein Local Municipality into the larger Rand West City Local Municipality after municipal elections on 3 August 2016.
